Bologna day trip

I will be in Bologna for 3 nights so would like to do a day trip on the 3rd day. (unless i'm so enamored with Bologna and want to stay the 3rd day). Since I will also be visiting Rome, Florence, and Milan, I do not want to visit another city. I understand Parma, Modena, Ravenna are all great day trips, but they are what I assume are small cities. I would really like to visit a small quaint town/village. Suggestions? I will not have a car so it does need to be accessible by train or bus.
I will also be visiting Oriveto for a night between Rome and Florence.

Is Ferrara too big for your taste?

I have been there and enjoyed it very much.

Otherwise, take a look at this list of "The 5 most beautiful villages to see near Bologna"
1. Visit Dozza, the open-air art gallery
2. Brisighella and the three guardians
3. La Scola, from watchtower to secret village
4. The tiny village of San Pietro
5. Monteveglio Antica, the impregnable stronghold and its abbey

I wouldn’t consider Ravenna a “small city”
The mosaics there are fabulous and worth a day trip
Easy train ride from Bologna

About Ravenna: IMO it's all about the mosaics. They are unique and wonderful, but not necessarily everyone's cup of tea.

I was there in the fall -- late September or early October, IIRC -- and it was still very busy, both with tour groups and with young adults apparently in town for the bars and the beach. I remember a lot of noise from motorbikes in my hotel room until all hours, but maybe that was just bad luck.

These are great, and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
Yeah I kind of wanted to visit somewhere small where I dont feel obligated to tour any museums or churches. I just walk this day to consist of walking, relaxing, eating, and enjoying the scenery. I will be visiting enough museums and churches in the other cities.

By train isn't easy, because several places aren't on a train line.
A town, reachable y train I can suggest:
- Vignola (medieval castle and fortress, cherries)
- Forlimpopoli (Medieval fortress, Artusi house and museum)
- Cesena or Forlì (in fact small cities, but much less touristic)
- Faenza (ceramic museum, cherches and buildings
- Imola (fortress, racetrack)
- Sant'Arcangelo di Romagna (galleries, wine and medieval hamlet)
- Fidenza (cathedral and center)

great! I will check these out also.
Just curious about prices of taxis. My first search was for Dozza (and fell in love instantly) 20-30 min to Imola, then a 15 min taxi ride.
I would be willing to do something like this as long as taxis princes are reasonable. Anything more than 20-25 euro I wouldnt think is reasonable.
