We will be using Bologna as a home base for part of our visit to Italy in January 2020.
Any recommendations on the best locations in the city to stay ?
Besides the key sights, are there any “ Hidden gems” in the city.
Thanks,
BT

We stayed at Hotel Novocento on Piazza Galileo and it was a perfect location. We could pop back into the hotel during the day, very centrally located.
Bookmarking! We're planning to visit Bologna in June for four days or so.
We stayed in an Airbnb in Bologna in the historical center. I can look for the listing, if you’d like. You may want to look at my Trip Report: “Birthday trip to Bologna” (March 2018) on this forum. It lists many places and restaurants in Bologna that we enjoyed.
We stayed in an apartment between the train station and the main plaza. We found this extremely convenient because we took several day trips during our nine days in Bologna. We felt close to everything in the city and had easy transport.
For a hidden gem, if you are interested in ancient Roman history the basement of the public library across from the Neptune fountain is amazing. They have a walk way through the archeological site discovered under the building. It’s free (donation accepted) and we were the only people there when we visited.
Have fun in Bologna!
I think a spot between the historic center and the train station is the best in this situation.
I really enjoyed the walking tour organized by the tourist office, but I do not know that it runs in January.
I stayed at a B&B this past summer - 10 minute walk from train station and 10-15 from central square area. Booked on booking.com Name was B&B Ambra. Loved it and would definitely stay there again. Ambra is the hostess and she is wonderful. Great breakfast included plus use of kitchen at all times if you want to have lunch or dinner in. All newly renovated and super clean.
All advice much appreciated !
I think a spot between the historic center and the train station sounds great.
Thanks !
A few years ago, we stayed at Metropolitan hotel, great location (between train station and center, just off Via Independenza), moderate price.
I am looking to return this spring (2020) but this time would like to rent an apartment.

The Espresso hotel, part of a small chain, is a block away from the central train station and across the street from the main bus terminal. The airport shuttle bus stops in the courtyard of the train station. The central city plazas are about a 10-minute walk away.
So it is very convenient for walking or day excursions. It has a main floor bar and restaurant for breakfast. Unfortunately rates have risen somewhat over the years and I think the four-star rating is a little self-congratulatory. But I would go back.
Southam, I just checked the rates and they're much cheaper than the Metropolitan. How were the breakfasts? Was the room quiet?
We stayed at Zanhotel Tre Vecchi at Bologna, and it was handy to the train station, also. It’s located at
Via dell'Indipendenza, 47.
We just stayed at this AirBnB in late September 2019
https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/5001023
which is at
Via Riva di Reno, 118 int.7, Bologna, Emilia-Romagna 40121, Italy
Perfect location.
The only negative is the spiral staircase to get to/from the bedroom.
Definitely recommended.
