*Has anyone traveled to Bolgheri, Italy in Tuscany? I do not know much about it but it was recommended by a woman I once met in Italy as a beautiful village that I should plan to visit. Thoughts? Recommendations?
I’ve been there each of the last 2 years, while staying down the road about 5 miles, outside a bigger hilltown, Castagneto Carducci, also worth a visit. Bolgheri is tiny, with a small church just inside the town wall gate, a few shops, a handful of restaurants and enoteccas, and an excellent gelateria at what was once the post office. I wouldn’t have used “village” to describe it, but maybe that’s an OK term now that I think about it. It’s nice, too, although “beautiful” isn’t necessarily the first word that comes to mind. The area is beautiful, though. The narrow road leading east towards Bolgheri is lined with tall cypress trees, and is known as the Cypress Alley.
It’s in the Bolgheri wine region, a few miles inland from the Mediterranean coast, where Super Tuscan wines have been developed in the past 40 years. Other towns nearby, like Donoratico and Cecina, are at the edge of the sea, so offer beach access. Touring wineries is a popular activity in the area.
You can also think of Bolgheri as a region as it has it's own wine designation like Chianti. It is a lovely area and agree it is worth a visit.
