Has anyone rented or know where to rent a small boat, not gondola, in Venice, Italy for a few hours?
You could rent a water taxi for a while. I wouldn't take a boat in the city on my own. There are a lot of boats on the water, and I don't think they would appriciate tourists drivers.
Try Googling "Venice boat rentals". I don't recall seeing advice on this subject here before. What immediately springs to mind is that theVenice lagoon is quite shallow and the navigation channels complex - on purpose; that's how the Venetians kept invaders at bay. So I don't know how easy it might be for a tourist to independently navigate around the lagoon.
We rented a self-drive canal boat in the Venice are for a week in Sept of 07. We lived on the boat.
You can't drive it down the Grand Canal. if you would like more information, please let me know. If you are only interested for a few hours, I think I would look into a water taxi as someone suggested.
