Boat from Positano to Capri in Oct.for a party of 4

We will be spending 4 nights in Positano, arriving the 23rd and leaving the 27th of Oct.and would like to do a day trip to Capri. I am having a hard time finding a ferry to do a day trip. I found a ferry ( Alilauro ) but it would be a short day---10AM returning 4.25PM. If we are going to spend the money I would prefer to be able to spend more time. Also, with the weather being iffy should we wait till we get there to book something? Any ideas? Thanks so much!

At that time of year, the ferries from Capri to Positano will be very curtailed. But the ferries between Capri and Sorrento run year-round. So, if you don't mind taking the bus to and from Sorrento, you can have a longer stay on Capri.

I think Harold nailed it. Unless you book an expensive private boat transfer, your best bet is to either start or end in Sorrento, or both, taking the SITA bus either to/from Positano. Ferries start running from Sorrento as early as 7:15 (except Sundays) and depart to Sorrento from Capri as late as 18:45.

Personally? I'd wait. Capri would be no fun in pouring rain. Also, boats can't dock in Positano on rough sea days so there's the small chance of working around that as well.

You will also have had a chance to check out the lines (or lack of them) for the SITA busses. Make sure you are looking at the ferry schedules for the date you are actually likely to be making the excursion. There is more than one ferry company to Capri from Sorrento, BTW. Note that the boat ride is half as long from Sorrento, and you might care to combine the day with a stroll around Sorrento and perhaps dinner - if the bus to Positano runs LATE enough!! Having to take a taxi will be expensive.

This is another example of how physically isolated is beautiful Positano. There is a price to be paid for that beauty, and a reason why people want to stay there. Have you made your departure plans yet ... ? Think about travel schedules now.

Tim, I believe (pretty sure, anyway) that schedules for all of the public ferry companies are included in my previous post's links.

Thanks Tim,

Yes, we have gone back and forth as to the best place to base our Amalfi experience. But we plan on a visit to Ravella and the town of Amalfi, another morning doing a guided hike above Positano and we wanted to stay on the actual Amalfi coast. My husband and I stayed in Ravella years ago---32 actually, on our honeymoon and just love the area. It might be more remote but so special! Our kids are not going to know what hit them when they see the views.

Thanks again for the info and being willing to share your traveling experience.

I would definitely play this by ear when you're there. There's no telling what the situation/weather will be like, and there seems to be no need to book ahead. I would say though, it sounds like you'd have at least 5 hours on Capri. It doesn't sound like much, but it's enough time to explore Anacapri and get up Mt. Solaro. While Capri was incredibly beautiful and I loved it, I also pretty much had my fill in about 6 hours.
