Boat from Naples to Sorrento

Has anyone taken a boat from Naples to Sorrento. I'm trying to decide if we'll take a boat or the Circumvesuviana. A boat sounds like much more fun...

What is the best way to reach the port from the Naples train staion? Will we be okay getting tickets once we get there?

Thanks for any and all help!

The boat is definitely more fun, but you've hit the nail on the head recognizing that the issue is how to get to the port. The advantage to taking the CV to Sorrento is that you're probably arriving in to the train station and they're both in the same building.

As far as the "best" way to get to the port, it depends on what you mean by best. Fastest way would definitely be a taxi. Queue up at the taxi stand outside the train station, keeping an eye on your bags. (It's a rough neighborhood.)

You should be fine to buy tickets once you get to the port. It was a few years ago, but I remember lots of ticket windows. Be sure to understand which pier you need to go to for the right boat, as there are many boats leaving from there to different places. Have them write it down for you if you don't understand.

You can take a local bus or tram from Napoli Centrale to Piazza Municipio (Molo Beverello).

Kristen, We were there 2 years ago and took the train from Naples. I would suggest taking the train to Sorrento and then catch the boat back to the Port in Naples. There are two boats, one fast and one slow. It would be easier to catch a taxi there! We actually walked to the train station from the port...it was long, but we were able to check out the area..and it is a little "seedy" However I was not afraid at all..You just need to let the Italians know who is BOSS! and of course, a few "bad" words in italian don't hurt! Check out the Sorrento webcam. We called our friends here and had them get on their computers so they could see us in Sorrento!

Kristen,
May I suggest you take the circumvesuvia to Sorrento, just get where you are going the easiest way possible. You have better reasons for boat rides, like to Capri, or to Salerno to see the Amalfi coast.

The ferry docks are just over a mile from the Naples train station. The CV train is faster if you take the slow ferry. The hydrofoil is faster than the CV train but if you factor in the transit time to the ferry docks, it may be slower overall.
