I am planning a trip to Italy next June and on our must-see list is the Blue Grotto in Capri. Do you have to buy tickets in advance for this trip or can you buy tickets the day of? I understand that the boat trips depend on the weather and high winds, so if we buy in advance do we get a refund?
The Blue Grotto was high on our list as well; alas, however, it was not to be. Tickets to the ferry are purchased in Capri - the ferry takes you out to the mouth of the Blue Grotto, as well as to many other lovely places like the Green Grotto, but the entrance to the Blue Grotto is very small and chances are more than likely that you will not be able to enter. IF the tide and conditions are right, small boats gather around the entrance and people depart their ferries, get on a small boat, pay a fee to the operator, and in they go. I would guess that, if you followed a tide table and did more research, you might be able to time it better than we did. I would also guess that, if the time is right, the ferries might get very crowded. I am sure others on this site will have more info on this topic. You should take the ferry ride regardless, because the area is breathtaking.
