Blue Grotto Capri and /or Emerald Grotto (Amalfi)

We are staying in Sorrento for three nights. One full day (second day) will be Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Villa di Papiri. Can Capri be done is just an afternoon and early evening (first day)? Is the Emerald Grotto in Amalfi worth a stop? We've hired a driver for the Amalfi drive to Paestum and back (ten hrs.) for our third day.

I consider the Emerald Grotto to be an extremely silly tourist trap. I think the guides are laughing at the tourists for being such suckers. Why? You pay the fare (10 or 15 euros pp, can't remember for sure) in Positano thinking you are going to see the grotto. But, no, when you reach the mouth, you have to pay another 5 euros pp to actually enter. Inside, the boatman points out various rock formations that vaguely resemble different things. The climax is a creche scene with plastic Jesus, Mary and Joseph dolls! The boatman pronounces it a "miraculo". I kid you not.

Capri is definitely do-able in an afternoon and evening. I would try and get tickets for the Blue Grotto as soon as you arrive, do that first and then go up and tour the town, have a nice dinner, etc. Some will say the grotto is touristy but I really enjoyed the whole experience and am glad I did it!

Thanks. We'll skip the Emerald Grotto. We are going in October and I'm hoping when we go to Capri, the weather will cooperate to see the Blue Grotto. We only have the afternoon and early evening. Not sure when it gets too dark to see the Blue Grotto. Thanks for the advice to get tickets right away.

The other thing to think about when going to the Blue Grotto is the tide. When we were there, the tide was too high and you couldn't get in to the Blue Grotto. It was disappointing but we hired a boat and went around the whole island and saw all the other "colored grottos" (green, white, etc) It was one of the highlights of our entire trip to Italy.

A boat ride around the island sounds like a good alternative. How much of the other grottos are visible from the boat?
