About 3 weeks ago, we took a ferry from Sorrento to Marina Grande in Capri, then took the funicular up the hill to the town. After verifying that conditions permitted entry to the Grotto, we caught a local bus to Anacapri and then the Blue Grotto (well marked and easy to do). You can also take a tour boat to the Blue Grotto from Marina Grande, but expect to pay more and wait longer to get in. We were amazed at how much cheaper the bus proved to be and best of all, we completely by passed the long wait on the tour boats. It left us plenty of time to go to the top of Mt. Solaro, explore other parts of the island and even enjoy a leisurely lunch. The Blue Grotto may be a "touristy" thing to do, but we thought it was a spectacular experience -- and we are glad we made the time. Enjoy!

We also just got back from Italy and did the Blue Grotto while spending a day in Capri. We arrived in Marina Grande from Sorrento and immediately found boat services to the Grotto. For 14E we joined a tour boat that circled the island and also stopped at the grotto for those who wanted to jump in a dinghy and go in. The scenery circling the island was amazing, and we got a great view (even went through) the Faragaloni Rocks. Very glad we did the grotto, it was beautiful. There really were no lines though, but we were there in mid-May, not really peak season. (BTW, it was an extra 10E to get into the dinghy and see the grotto). The whole thing took 2 hours.

We also did Capri and the Blue Grotto as a daytrip from Sorrento during July 2006. Took a hydrofoil to Capri and with no wait at all got on the boat that took us to the entrance of the grotto. We did wait abit once we got to the entrance as the boats jockey up to get in position for the small row boats to pick you up. The boat ride around the island was absolutely beautiful. This was an amazing time to be in Sorrento when Italy won the World Cup! Unforgettable! Have a great trip!

We took a boat from Positano to Capri. Toured the island and our boat trip included going to the Blue Grotto. It was fantastic. I would do it again in a heart beat. So I say do the Blue Grotto. Well worth it!

Hi Edward - I just got back from Italy and if you arrive in the morning go straight to the boats and do the tour (that way you can try to avoid the crowds). We didn't have a wait at all since we did this first. You can also do the bus but you have to transfer a couple times to get there (but you save more money). Personally I liked taking the boat there just to have that as part of the experience.

The blue grotto is expensive but totally worth it IMO. It's a crazy experience when you get there...you literally transfer from your speed boat into these small row boats. And then the row boat guys sing to you once you're inside. It's definitely something I'll always remember.

Have fun!

I can't swim, and I don't like water very much (even from a boat). But I REALLY liked the whole Blue Grotto experience. I second the advice about doing it first thing in the AM upon arrival on Capri to avoid the crowds. After the Grotto, you can have the small boat captain drop you at the little deck next to it, walk up the stairs, and catch the bus to Anacapri for the chairlift to the top of Monte Solaro.

Capri was one of the highlights of our trip to Italy last September. The Blue Grotto was at the top of my list of "must dos" but unfortunately, the Blue Grotto was closed due to high tides. We hired a boat to take us around the whole island and stopped at all the other grottos (white grotto, green grotto, etc.) but were unable to see the Blue Grotto. Just something to be aware of!

I did a tour around the island and it stopped at the blue grotto and anyone who wanted to could get out and go in (you pay seperately for the grotto). The whole boat did it and they patiently waited for everyone and continued on to see the rest of the tour. As soon as you get off the ferry the boat for the tour was on the left, and the ticket counter was at the wall near there. You will see tons of signs of people offering their service. I enjoyed the tour itself and the blue grotto was a great addition.
