I've spent the last month engrossed in planning my husband and I's first trip to Europe this May and it just dawned on me that my birthday falls within our trip. We actually will be traveling from Cinque Terre to Rome on my birthday (we should be in Rome by late afternoon). Being in Rome alone is going to be a unbelievable birthday present all in itself but would you suggest anything imparticularly for our first evening/my birthday there? We will be in Rome for 4 additional days.

When you reach Rome either walk(about 20 minutes)or take the Metro to the Coliseum stop and go to the Forum, watch the sunset and the Starlings flocking in the sky at dusk. You won't believe it!

Agreed with the Colosseum / Forum area to commemorate your birthday in Rome.
From there I'd consider going over to the Piazza Navona area for dinner -- just be sure to get off on one of the side-streets (in another thread there were several restaurant ideas given for Rome -- "eating in Rome" thread, I think... at any rate, a couple were for specific places off of Piazza Navona).
