Birthday celebration

My wife and I will be in Rome on her birthday in September. It's our first trip to Europe. I would like to do something special. Any suggestions?

Ristorante il Gabriello on Via Vittoria 51, a few blocks from the Spanish steps is a very nice, reasonably priced up-scale restaurant that would be perfect for a birthday dinner. The place is reviewed in Steves' Rome book.

If she likes to cook, maybe a cooking class for 1/2 day or full day?

A cooking class is a great idea! However, it reminds me of a scene I saw once in a movie. The groom buys his bride-to-be a top-of-the-line blender as a wedding gift, having thought carefully about her daily habits and how much she loves to make that green energy-drink-shakey-thing every morning. Upon opening the beautifully wrapped package, the bride-to-be dissolves in tears and runs to her mother wailing that the gift signifies her future husband's secret perception of her as his resident cook and bottle washer. :) I once had a hilarious time at a pasta-making class (not in Rome, though). I was with a large-ish group and the chef was so funny. We laughed till we nearly cried. And came away with great tips and techniques for making pasta from scratch at home with our hands - not with one of those American pasta makers.
