I mapped out my own walking tour of a lot of Rome's attractions (Spanish steps to Trevi fountain, pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo di Fiori etc) but I am wondering how it would be to rent bikes instead of walking. Would the traffic in those areas make it too hazardous? We will be there in June 2020.
In addition to car traffic, you would need to cut through throngs of tourists.
True! I think we will stick to walking it!
I am an active cyclist and my life means a lot to me. I would never ride a bike in Rome. The Italians are not predictable drivers and the traffic is just too much.
and adding scooters makes it a triple threat.
The only way I would ride a bike in Rome is to take a tour with Top Bikes. And the only tour I would do with them, although they do offer tours through the heart of Rome, is the one that goes out to the catacombs and aqueduct park. That was a lot of fun, and it’s outside the city, where you are riding on less populated roads, including the ancient Appian Way. I loved that tour, but I would never take a bicycle in downtown Rome. Too many people and too dangerous!
