Biking (not Hiking) the Cinque Terre

For those of you who don't like hiking trails, but would rather bike a trail, the Cinque Terre (and surrounding) offer a fairly new option.
The trail Levanto-Bonassola-Framura opened last year and is all flat (on a former old rail line). From Levanto one can even go over Monterosso, but in that case there are some hills, so it's more challenging.

I like Bonassola a lot (more than Levanto) and I presume it's still not totally invaded by the Rick Steves' tribes yet, so it offers a good alternative to staying at the Cinque Terre proper. From Bonassola to Monterosso it's less than 10 min by train.

Thanks Roberto!

Amazing photos!

It's great to know that the bicycle "trail" is specifically for bicyclists & pedestrians & no cars!

Mike,

I discovered the events surrounding Operation Ginny II while doing some research on WW-II history, and agree they were absolutely very tragic. There was also an Operation Ginny I which had to be called off, which led to the later events of Ginny II. One of the Generals involved in that was executed in Naples after the war.

Roberto:

I like the sound of Bonassola - bike trails and less crowds. I tentatively booked a room in Manarola for two nights at the beginning of October, not sure if this is the best idea. Can you recommend a place in Bonassola? We are hoping to keep the nightly rate around 100 euro.

Thanks,

David

Couple of questions:

1) Looks like one end of the bike trail starts in Levanto, about how many miles/km is it from Monterosso to Levanto?

2) You said the bike trail is basically flat, right? The aerial photo map on the website makes it look like there's a bit of elevation gain and loss (crossing a low ridge line) between Bonassola and Framura?

Kent,

Google Chrome has this handy feature that allows me to translate Italian web pages into English.
I found this on the website Roberto sent:

Path - Framura to Levanto
Length: 16km
Drop: 18m

Do you have any information about bike rentals in either Levanto or Framura? Is it easy to catch a train from Vernazza? This looks like a scenic ride!

Levanto has at least 3 or 4 bike rental places. Cicli Raso is one. Framura also does. From Vernazza you take any regional train going toward Genoa. There are several trains every hour and Levanto is 2 stops from Vernazza (about 10 min ride). The bike ride from Levanto to Framura is 10 miles round trip, the path is flat on a converted decommissioned rail line.
