IS it possible to rent bikes for extended time - we are staying 3.5 km outside of Lucca. More importantly, can you rent a child carrier (for 3 year old) and bikes for 8 and 11 year old kids

Beth, we've done 2 self guided tours with this company. Perhaps contact them to see if they would just rent bikes to you...or if you are based in just one place, you could get them to do some wonderful day trips out.
Not sure if they have bike carriers/tag alongs, but Guiliana would most likely be able to get you in touch with someone else that could help you out.

I'd email with your request and see if it would be available. As far as I know, they don't really just rent bikes, but in this economy, maybe they'd be able to do it.

Speak with Palladino at Chronos Bike Shop. He rents bikes daily or weekly, and has the child carriers you attach to the back of the bikes. He speaks english very well.
Have fun. We thoroughly enjoyed our 5 day stay in Lucca.
