Bike tour of Florence

Our family of five, myself, husband and three kids (10, 8 and 5) will be in Florence for one night...and now after some research I wish we were staying longer! Seems to be a beautiful city with so much to see. Anyhow, we arrive mid morning from Siena and I was thinking a bike tour may be a good way to get a bit more in. We are not interested in visiting a lot of museums but would rather soak up the city, visit the market and just take it all in. We are hiking the Duomo in the morning, which I am really excited about. We were planning on doing a guided tour of the Uffizi but have opted out of it due to lack of time and think that time would be better spent else where.

Would love to hear if anyone has toured the city by bike and their thoughts. :)

hey jenn
another option for a day is check withlocals.com you have 'the best of florence a family friendly tour" or "little chef treasure hunt in florence". they are kid friendly and kids are free. florencetown has gelato and pizza making or a boat ride down the arno river with discounts for kids, press kid friendly. mom and dad and kids can all have a great time.

Jenn, I've not done Florence by bike and frankly wouldn't do it that way, especially with young children. While I'm sure the tours TRY to use less congested streets, I've no idea how they get to the highlights without having to maneuver some heavy pedestrian crowds and/or vehicular traffic. It's just a much easier, enjoyable, less risky place to sightsee on foot than 2 wheels, IMHO.

With the little time you have, I also wouldn't do a boat cruise - aside from Ponte Vecchio, what's along the Arno isn't as interesting as other parts of the city - or a food class. Better to hit some of those interesting parts that figure into the Florentine story.

We are hiking the Duomo in the morning,

Can you explain a bit? The church is pretty close to the main train station (S.M. Novella) so if that's where you're arriving, you won't have much of a "hike". Hopefully you've pre-purchased tickets for the entire Duomo complex, and are aware that to climb the dome requires advance reservations? The interior of the cathedral is less impressive than the exterior, and some other parts of the complex (museum, baptistry) are more interesting. Anyway, covering all the bits can take some time.

With however many hours you have left in the afternoon, I'd do a self-guided walking tour of other sections of Florence. Most good guidebooks include suggested routes (Rick has one also available as an audio tour) and moving along at your own pace might be a good idea for your youngest children.

The heart of Florence is easily walked. I think bicycles would be a hindrance. If you wanted to stop, you'd have to figure out what to do with them. I don't recall seeing many bicycles. There's a lot of pedestrian traffic. I think everyone involved would be frustrated.

I have seen bike tours in central Florence but I don't recall their being children. Looking at the website for I Bike Florence, children the age of yours would need to ride in a child seat, in a bike trailer or for your 10 year old only on a tandem bike. They specify that children must be 12 years old to ride their own bike. That means 5 of you would have to fit onto 2 bikes, and you'd have to inquire as to whether that's permitted.
