My husband and I want to rent bicycles and ride from Florence to Siena (and potentially back). We found a tour that allows you to ride one way, but we aren't interested in the wine tasting that comes along with it or the price. Technically, we can handle the mileage there and back, but aren't sure if it is really doable when you add in seeing the sights in Siena. If you've done the route, would it be easy and safe to follow on our own? Has anyone ever transported a bike on the train?
Thanks!
Laura, Ok, so I've only driven the route, but I have been on the road you'd likely want to take a few times, which is the CR 222, and is covered by Rick Steve in his guidebook. It is very easy indeed to follow. Safe...well, it's a two lane road most of the way. The road is also well traveled by drivers, so you'll have a good deal of company along the way. It is really beautiful though. I just did a quick search on Youtube, and whilst I found nothing specific and only this route, there was plenty on biking in this area of Italy. Bikes on the train...no problem. Cheers!
