Can anyone recommend where to rent bicycles in Lucca?
We were in Lucca in 2014 and found bike rentals throughout the wall area. I believe we went with one we found in RS Italy. Be prepared to leave your credit card with them for a "deposit". We were a little tired and off our game so when we went to return the bike all of the exits off the wall began to look similar and each had a bike rental. We couldn't remember which one was ours. After a few tries and another trip around we found ours but learned a good lesson on paying closer attention.
Was there in Oct, there's bike rental shops near every wall entrance. We rented ours near the Santa Maria gate, I didn't do the rental but, it's pretty much leave a credit card, single charge for 30-mins, additional charge for every 30-minutes after; its a very casual process, no forms. Riding around the top of the wall is a leasuirely 20-minutes (2.5-miles), near the ramps of the walls at the base, there's pedestrian/bike entrances that allow you to walk/bike the interior of the wall which lead to the outside of the wall. Some of the spaces show the cannon emplacements, others have community art work decorating the space.
Renee, I have had similar problems even with car parking. I now use my cell phone to photograph the location. Great benefit when returning.
Be sure to ask for a helmet, if you want one. They're unlikely to push one on you.
Great replies.. thank you so much. Like the idea especially of taking a photo. How did you all feel about leaving your credit card though? I'm leary of that with signature/#s on it, wouldn't be hard to pick up & use
We only had to leave a driver's license at Antonio Poli's bike rental. No credit card. We rented the bikes for 1 hour and made 2 loops around the ramparts. Easy and fun ride.
I've never worried too much about it. Other sites will ask for guarantees as well. I've never had any issues with leaving I.D. or credit cards.

Christine, How would we be able to locate Antonio's? does he have a sign?
Kathy, I found Antonio Poli bike rental in Rick's Italy guide. The address is Piazza Santa Maria 42. There are a bunch of bike shops lined up together at Piazza Santa Maria and we just walked down to the one with the sign "POLI" in big blue letters. His shop is right next to an entrance onto the ramparts. Antonio adjusted the bike seats for us and then we were off for a great ride!
Antonio Poli is where we rented at Piazza Santa Maria 42. There is also Cicli Bizzarri at Piazza Santa maria 32. Love Lucca. One of my favorite cities. Let me know if you need any other recommendations: hotel, restaurant, shopping, etc.
