We'll stay a few nights in Siena in April, and would like to rent bikes and head out into the countryside one of the days. Sites I've found deal more with rentals and long tours. Any suggestions on a direction to head for, say, half a day out, half a day back? We're late '50s age-wise and in reasonably good shape but not looking to test our reserves to the max.

We used them for two different 10 day trips in Italy, and they were fantastic. As you can see from the link, they offer one day trips. email and ask if they can arrange a custom trip for you from Siena. With route maps, sites of interest, water bottles and bikes supplied, it's so much easier than trying this on your own. You should bring your own helmet!
We've ridden from Siena, but not loop ride, we rode to the next town and then continued.

Thanks for the link to the guided day trips. We're looking more for a casual ride that allows stops as we want, and stick to the loop plan since we'll have just one day for this particular outing, leaving Siena in the morning, and returning before dusk. Would love to go town-to-town someday!
