Beyond Venice?

We (couple mid 60's) are planning 3 nights in Venice during the third week of 2 month trip to Europe. Had thought about going to Cinque Terre from Venice for two nights and then to Lake Como for two nights. Everything I find makes the trip to Cinque Terre about 7 hours on train with several changes. Maybe we should eliminate CT and spend that time somewhere closer to Venice/Lake Como area. Any suggestions on that? And ... from Lake Como we want to go to Interlaken ... what is the best train route to take? Thanks in advance!

You could do something as simple as add the extra two nights from the CT to Venice. Lovely spot and frankly no matter how long you are there already, another two nights in Venice would be delightful. Or add one to Venice and one to Lake Como. Or if those oprions don't appeal to you, then think about Vicenza, Verona, Bassano del Grappa or one of the lovely spots on the southern end of Lago di Garda. Bergamo would also be on the way and a lovely town a bit off America tourist radar.

I would suggest spending more time in the Lake Como area. After your train ride over to the lake from Venice, if you are only spending two nights, you do not have much time to actually see the area. We spent 5 nights in Varenna a few years ago and had a wonderful time exploring all the small villages via ferry. We even went over to Lausanne on a day trip which was beautiful. Relax and savor the lake area!
