Beware the jabberwock...and wild boars near the Vatican

Getting rid of wild boars inRome! From the New York Times. “The euthanizing of a boar and her six piglets on a playground near the Vatican has aroused fury in Rome, a city that has long complained about the often aggressive animals.” And I only worried about pickpockets and Vespas!

Wow. I remember visiting friends on the base in Vilseck, Germany and being warned about wild boar. But that was not Rome.

This is yet another example of the conflict between wildlife and human activity. We've had a persistent problem here in some parts of B.C. with Bears that have been habituated, mostly as a result of people not securing their garbage bins properly. In many cases, the Bear pays the ultimate price.

I'm surprised that Wild Boars are such a problem in Rome. I'm sure there are lots of restaurants there that serve Cingiale.

Wildlife is increasing in Italy since some tens of years. I am glad of it. With a wider number of wild animals is normal that they live even closer to humans or even inside cities. There are hawks having nests on several towers and belltowers, foxes wandering along streets. Since some years even boars and roe deers living even in parks near or inside cities. Even in very noisy spaces: for example is quite easy watch roe deers in the no-man land between highway and railway in Emilia-Romagna: they are not scared by the noise of cars and trucks.
Fortunately they haven't (yet) learn to steal the wallet to purchase food!

The area administered by the Mayor of Rome is so large because of the big private parks owned by noble families. Most of the green areas surrounding the Villas become public after 1871. We all know the park around the Borgheses' second home, but there are others not blessed by a famous museum.
The modern city grew up around these parks.

Add that most of the countryside close to Rome is protected, or owned by the President or by the Pope... and you can get why boars can easily roam all the way downtown remaining in non-built-up areas. And downtown is full of free food if you are a Roman boar. Their cousins from Tuscany wouldn't dare to enter Florence...

Kill 'em all and let the Great Chef sort out.
