I expect to arrive at Fuminico at approximately 8:00...then take a flight around 4:30 p.m. the same day to Catania. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do while waiting.....thought about taking a tour of Ostia Antica...then getting back to the airport in time for afternoon flight. Is this too ambitious after an overnight flight from US? Any suggestions?
Addie: You're right about pilots, I used to be one (private, small planes) and I know pilots can use all the help they can get. The Ostia quick visit should be enjoyable for you, if you can stay awake! :)
This is perfect for you because Ostia is close to the airport. Check your baggage if necessary. I've never gone to Ostia from the airport--probably quickest to take a taxi, the miles to Ostia are not huge so a taxi should not be an arm and a leg (only an arm). Maybe you can even get there from the airport on public transport but I have no idea about that and time and speed of transport is important in this situation so I'd lean in the direction of taxi. In fact, perhaps you can arrange with the taxi driver to pick you up at a specified time for the ride back? Or maybe there will be a taxi stand there, I don't remember. Bring Rick's Rome book, he has a self-tour that takes 2 hours. And obviously, don't push your luck getting back to the airport, make sure you have a guaranteed way of getting back there well before you need to be.
Kent from Oregon, thanks so much for your reply! Of course I don't expect to get much sleep on the flight to Rome from Newark....I have a thing that if I do sleep, the pilot won't be able to fly the plane or will make a mistake...! My trip takes place early July and am looking forward to seeing Ostia.
