Between Cinque Terre & Nice

Hello Everyone,

So we are planning a trip to Italy next month, starting in Rome and ending in Nice, France. I've already booked hotels in Rome and Vernazza. Being only a month out I was very fortunate to secure a book for Vernazza. All the nicer accommodations were already booked. Only after making the Vernazza booking did a realize that one of the cities I wanted to visit, Siena, is between Rome and Cinque Terre, which would require 3-4 hours of backtracking by rail. We don't have a whole lot of time, so I'd prefer not to backtrack. Can anyone suggest a good place to visit between Cinque Terre and Nice? Thanks!

KC,

I've never stopped there, but one place you might look at is Sanremo. The town hosts a big music festival every year, and I've seen that event on Italian TV many times. It looks like quite a picturesque small town.

I'm sure Roberto will be along shortly with some definitive information on the best place to visit.

Fantastic! I'm loving everyone's input.

Another place I considered is Lake Como. While it's not anywhere "between" CT and Nice, it's also not backtracking.

I've heard of San Remo, but only because it's referenced in the movie "Talented Mr. Ripley" when the characters go to San Remo for a jazz festival. As a side note, if you haven't seen the movie, it has some beautiful and stylish backdrops of vintage Italy.

The Lake Como area (not the town of Lake Como) is better if you have at least a whole day and one overnight. It could eat up a lot of time. Assuming you do have a car, not that it will do you any good once you get to Lake Como, you have to see the Lago by boat.

Vernazza to Nice does take 6-7 hours by train, but many people cover that distance without breaking the trip. Menton is near Nice, so it only shaves one hour off the travel time from Vernazza. Backtracking a bit, but not as far as Siena, you could also consider the walled town of Lucca.
