Hello, wondering which area is better? We plan to do all of the touristy stuff: colosseum, Vatican, Trevi fountain, Spanish steps, trastevere, etc. Taking the train in and out. We like to walk as many places as possible ! thanks!!
We prefer anywhere in the Pantheon/Piazza Navonna/Campo de’Fiori area
Dead center of Centro Historico
You can walk almost everywhere from three
It's all easily walkable. The Colosseum area will likely be easiest for walking with luggage from the train station. Trastevere is a hike with luggage but we really enjoyed staying there.
We stayed in both areas and better to stay near the Pantheon. More food options and sights nearby if you want to walk. Depending on your energy you may have to taxi or bus to both the Colosseum and Vatican from the Pantheon area but it is definitely more lively.
Another vote for the Pantheon area. It’s my preferred location to walk to many of the sites, plus I like the atmosphere of that area in the evening.
I'll throw in my 2 cents for the Colosseum area--I stayed there last April at the Hotel Lancelot and liked feeling a bit removed from the congested tourist central area, preferring to go there, explore and then retreat to my peaceful neighborhood--and I loved seeing the Colosseum every day as I went about my business. Plenty of restaurants in the area, close to both the Colosseo and Manzoni metro stations.
