Best website to buy Colosseum tickets?

I have to two questions:
One: I am a bit confused about which website I should use to buy the tickets to the Colosseum, Palatine Hill and Roman Forum. Rick Steves' guide says www.archeoroma.beniculturali.it/en under the "cost and hours" section, later on when he explains how to get the tickets for the underground and third ring tour he writes another website, which I have seen in this forum as the official site, www.coopculture.it. Are they the same? What calls my attention is that the telephone number (if I choose to buy the tickets over the phone) is the same. Where have you bought your tickets?

Second: I thought that the underground and third ring tour was a permanent tour but now I saw it will end on April 30th. Any idea if they close it and re-open again during the year? If so, can I book this tour after having the tickets for the three sites?

Thanks!

They have only been releasing tour dates for the underground/third tier a few months at a time. No one knows why they're doing this. Just keep checking the website for updates.

As for where to book tickets for the colosseum, use the coopculture site. It's the official site and the cheapest out there.

http://www.coopculture.it/en/colosseo-e-shop.cfm

This is also the site where you get the phone number to book the underground tour once more dates are released. Even if you have already purchased entry tickets you can still call to book the tour. Just let them know you already have the tickets so they don't charge you the entry fee again. The tour will only cost an additional 9 euros each. If they try to tell you it's 22.50 euros they are also charging you for entry.

Do you buy tickets and then book the underground separately? How do I know when my dates are open? I can't seem to find anything with dates.....

You can book your entry tickets at any time. For the dates available go to:

http://www.coopculture.it/en/colosseo-e-shop.cfm

scroll down the page to the second picture. It has the dates available. Those dates will change by mid April. I'm not sure why they keep releasing tickets in batches, they won't tell me specifics, but last year they released the whole summer at the same time. Just keep checking.

Once you buy your entry tickets and the tours become available you'll need to call to book the tour. There is no way to do this online. Just call the number (it's below and to the left of the tour dates) and let them know you already have entry tickets and just want to book the tour. This will cost an additional 9 euros each.

Oh ok, so it's like a whole range of dates (Sept- April), not a place where you can click an individual date.

The regular tickets that I buy do not have a date right? I just buy the admission tickets for 14 euro (kids are really only 2 euro?). I can buy those whenever.

Then when I see June pop up in that second box, I call and add the underground.

Right? Thanks for the help!!!!

I just booked the underground tour yesterday. I called the number listed. The woman who answered spoke Italian, and I asked (in Italian) if she spoke English (which I was confident she did). Communication was easy, and I reserved my time in April, and bought both the entrance tickets and tour together. I am going with my 11 yr old, and she was free, with the exemption of a 2 euro fee.

The experience was easy, just the hold times were about 5 or 6 minutes. Fortunately, I call Europe frequently for work, so I didn't have to worry about the cost of the call :-).

I have been to the Colosseum numerous times, but never had the opportunity to do the underground tour (or upper level) - will be great to share that with my Daughter.

Kim, the entry tickets are open ended. You can buy today and they are good through December 31rst. Kids are free but you pay the 2 euros booking fee.

For the tour tickets you'll need to pick a date and time. These are specific and you cannot miss your slot. Kids will pay full price for the tour. It will cost 9 euros each.

Hi Donna,

I just bought tickets the other day. My daughter is 11, and the tour is free for her - just the 2 euro fee. I just double checked the receipt to confirm. It cost me 25 Euro total for my daughter and I for entrance tickets (me only, she is free, 12 euro), the tour (9 euro, again, me only she is free), Online booking fee (4 Euro, 2 Euro each).

Glen, you did not book a tour for your daughter. She only has entry tickets. She doesn't get on the tour for free, she must pay the same fee as everyone else. The only thing she gets for free is the entry into the sites. Tours are not covered by the "free" entry. Your cost for your entry fee plus tour tickets plus service charges should be around 33 euros. I would call them back to book her on the tour.

Hi Donna,

That is what I thought... but here is my receipt - it has under 12 no charge. It loses formatting on the forum, but the receipt clearly shows a reservation Gratuito, and specifies under 12:

Colosseo Sotterranei + III Inglese € 9,00 1 € 9,00
Attività: Colosseo Sotterranei + III Inglese » Colosseo » Data e Orario: 23/04/2014 10.40

Attività: Colosseo Sotterranei + III Inglese » Colosseo » Data e Orario: 23/04/2014 10.40
Under 12

Col-For-Pal Singoli Intero € 12,00 1 € 12,00
Attività:

I still don't think they charged you correctly. I would call back to confirm. I would hate for you to get there to find out that they had given your daughter a concession she didn't qualify for and then be told there was no room for her on the tour. Just call to confirm because kids are not free for tours, just for entry. They actually don't even offer a free ticket to anyone for the underground tour. Only full and reduced price.

I finally managed to buy general tickets for the Colosseum on the coopculture site -- where can I lock in a date?

I can only go on the 19th ... do I need to call? Or can I just go in since I am not doing a tour....

Hopeless and Confused...

Steve

Thanks!

Hi All,
I would like to take my mom on this tour, but wondering how much walking there is. If we do the Colosseum and the underground/third ring tour, how much time should we expect to be on our feet? then is there someplace to sit down and rest before going on to the forum and plantine [actually we nmight skip these].
thanks,
ellen

When I go to the coopculture website and get to the payment page, it asks for nationality. I can't find United States anywhere on the list or English or American, what should input for this box? I would like to buy online, but can't figure this out. Thanks for any help!

poole_ta: the Italian for United States is "Stati Uniti."

I am also confused by the website. I visited the coopculture.it site and found where to buy tickets, but I cannot figure out how to book a date and time. Do you just print your voucher and show up whenever you'd like to visit?

Yes, just show up. The tickets are valid through December 31rst, 2014.
