My friends are traveling LaSpezia to Siena.I know there are direct trains to Florence and then the bus but am wondering if there is a better way.

Yes. Better to take the train from La Spezia to Siena. Trip will take 3.0-3.5 hours and costs EUR 10.50 2nd class. Trip via Florence takes 4.0-4.5 hours and will cost more. Both routes generally require 2 changes, so no difference there. Bus from Florence does arrive in central Siena, but it's a quick, easy and inexpensive (EUR 1) bus ride from the Siena train station up to the center of town.
