Hoping to find an overnight sleeper train from Wengen to Amalfi, but can't seem to find one. Would people recommend flying or taking a train and if train, what rail do you take? For safety, we would prefer a sleeper train so we can "lock" ourselves inside. Have had friends get robbed overnight. We are two 40 something females travelling together. Thank you.
That would be a 12 hr train route, with changes, which wouldn't be so relaxing for sleep. You can check Rome2rio, but sometimes this site can be inaccurate.
I'd would recommend looking at flights from Zurich to Naples, using Google flights for research, but booking directly with the airlines. Swiss Airlines should have a flight under 2 hours. You are covering a lot of territory.
Good luck!
kristalox, welcome to this newsboard with your very first post.
Since you have expressed fear, it might be useful to say if this is your first trip to Europe. How many countries are you visiting, over what length of time? Where are you flying in and out from. You need to understand that no internet hackers are going to track you down and abduct you if you provide this information.
I know it seems awkward, but you may wish to start writing "Amalfi (town)", if that's what you mean. Many posters here think of "the Amalfi Coast" as "Amalfi", and are unaware that Sorrento is not, technically, on the Amalfi Coast. It's on the Gulf of Naples. This is not picayune academic correction; This is a location less served by convenient mass transportation, and many people planning a trip do not give sufficient weight to time to get there, or time to get out (even, say, to Naples or Rome) for their ultimate flight home. You need to be precise when asking for advice.
Not my first time but haven't been since having kids and while I have a very supportive husband I'm having anxiety about leaving my kids for 17 days! We're staying in Amalfi, not Amalfi Coast. When we were looking at trains, we were assuming Serrento was the best hub. Now considering flying from Zurich to Naples as another person suggested.
Itinerary:
PDX to Paris, arrive May 29
Paris to Wengen June 2
Wengen to Amalfi town June 4 - we have an extra day here if we fly so might add a day in Amalfi or make a quick stop elsewhere (Lake Como or venture to the Bernina Express?) and fly out of Milan?
June 5-9 - Amalfi town, not coast
June 9-13 Rome, staying in Trastevere
Thanks for the prompt reply. I think I made it harder; Amalfi the town is in fact, "on the Amalfi Coast." That's important because there is no train there, as there is for Sorrento or Salerno. I am reluctant to flog a post-war, purpose-built, reinforced-concrete town like Sorrento, but there is no argument that it has the best transit connections for daytrips. But Sorrento is not that much like Amalfi (town.) We slept five nights at the Ambasciatori Grand in Sorrento, and it was just right for us.
This whole area books up six months or more in advance, so you will have real trouble going this summer (2023).
While Naples is rich with history and art (Sorrento is not), it is a gritty, urban experience. I don't recommend it for someone who spends every day in a Captain's Chair in a Minivan or Lexus SUV. (I'm not slamming you, krista, I'm talking about people who like dirty cities, and people who rarely enter them. I'm a native of Manhattan.) Unless they are interested in the Italian monarchy, "That Hamilton Woman", or Renaissance Art, two women on a getaway do not want to stay in Naples for multiple nights. Sorry if I have reduced you to a cultural stereotype!

We have reservations already in Amalfi. I was mentioning Sorrento only as a hub for train travel. We are ultimately trying to figure out the best way to get from Wengen to Amalfi.
Fly to Naples
Taxi to Napoli Centrale
Train to Salerno
Ferry to Amalfi
Amalfi town IS on the Amalfi coast
You will need to be IN your departure city the night before-where are you flying home from?
We are flying home from Rome. So you recommend if we're flying from Zurich to Naples to stay in Zurich for the night?

Probably
Not sure how far Wengen is from Zurich
But I meant your departure to US and sounds like you’re good there
Take train from Salerno to Rome
Still not sure you understand that Amalfi town is on the Amalfi coast
