Best way to travel from Tirano to Ortisei?

We are looking to get from Tirano to Ortisei without renting a car. There does not seem to be a very direct way to do this even though the distance is not that great. Does anyone have recommendations?

The direct route (basically eastward) does look highly problematic by public transportation. Perhaps someone else will have a suggestion. Perhaps there's something available during peak season (when do you anticipate making the trip?) that's not reflected in the online schedules currently available.

What I do in situations like this is develop a burning desire to see one or more places along the way (you have Bergamo and Verona, and I think Trento is said to be nice, though I'm not sure about that one). To make that a viable technique, though, you need extra time, because the whole trip will take much longer if you want to make stops beyond those necessary to change buses or trains.

Thank you for these responses! That's what it looked like to me as well, not easy. If anyone else has any other ideas, let me know. Otherwise we may just spend a little time in Verona or someplace else along the way.

In spite of being not so distant as the bird flies, there is not an easy way. I guess the easier path, still very long to travel but landscapes to die for, would be through Switzerland, Swiss postbus #821 to Müstair and then #811 to Malles. If #821 is not running the alternative (easier and safer, but longer) is train over the Bernina to Pontresina and Zernez and #811 postbus Zernez-Malles/Mals. At Malles/Mals you switch to a regional train (run by sad.it), maybe a train change in Merano, in Bolzano you switch to the Ortisei bus. Timetables should be checked twice as you are travelling in remote regions and if you make a mistake you can be stranded somewhere.

Thanks, everyone! We are going next winter so planning to ski in Val Gardena. We may end up doing a sort of reserve of what had intended, so that we head down to Oritsei from Innsbruck, which is only about a two hour train ride. Thinking of starting in Saint Moritz, going west on the Glacier Express to Zermatt, then up to Murren for a few nights before heading over to Innsbruck, then down to Ortisei. If we go the southern route to Ortisei, we may do a stopover in Verona. We could also ski in Austria, but Val Gardena looks so amazing and we have wanted to visit the Dolomites. The good news is, it will all be gorgeous!
