Best way to travel from Rome to Budpest

I am looking for the best way to travel from Rome to Budapest in September, I have checked the normal travel sites and the cost for a ns flight is prohibitive and the 1 stop flights take the 1 hr and 45 min flight to 5 to 6 hrs.
