Best way to travel from Positano to Naples? Through Sorrento or Salerno?

Hello,

We will be in Italy for a week beginning this Friday - yay! We are staying in Positano but flying out of Naples, so need to arrive there the day before. What is the easiest way to make this journey from Positano to Naples? I originally thought we would take a ferry or bus to Sorrento then train from there, but I just checked the Rome to Rio app and it came up with taking the ferry Positano to Salerno then then train to Naples.

It will most likely be raining, if that affects ferries, so is this the best option?

Any info or tips on making the transfer from the port in Salerno to the train would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joan

Easiest way IMO is to hire a private driver. How are you getting to Positano at the beginning of the trip? Have you considered the Positano shuttle?

You have to tell us if you need the cheapest option or not. Sorrento is less mileage and the (gritty) commuter train has really cheap walk up tickets, but baaaaad crowding in summer. Not so bad in April, maybe. Salerno is the regular trenitalia company, but requires a bus change in Amalfi. Many ferries don’t run until sometime in April. Positano has physically small ferries that can fill up.

Considering the cost of a private driver, I would opt for the ferry. A direct ferry from Positano costs €12 and takes 70-80 minutes, or Amalfi €8, 40 minutes. The train to Napoli 40 minutes and can run from €5-16 depending on when you buy your ticket. If you take a ferry, make sure it goes to Salerno Concordia. It's just a short walk from the railway station. If you are heading to the Naples airport, take the airport shuttle from Sorrento to the airport.

Great thoughts - thank you. We are actually coming to Positano via the island of Procida, so will be taking the ferry in. I did not realize that there is a ferry from Positano to Naples. This sounds like the best option. We are heading to a hotel in the historical center, so will train or taxi there from the port - great hint about the port.

Joan,

The easiest and most direct route from Positano to Naples would be to use either a Taxi or private transfer service, especially when hauling luggage. I believe this service is still listed in the guidebook - http://www.monettitaxi17.it/English.htm . One of the advantages of this approach is that they can drop you right at your destination (hotel or rail station).
