We are visiting Orvieto in May and then going on to Sorrento. What is the recommended way to travel there? We will have a car. We were thinking of visiting a winery along the way. Is this a possibility? Also wondering if we should. drive to Naples and drop off the car and then take a boat to Sorrento. Or we could just take a train. So many options. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Drive to Sorrento and drop the car there at one of the rental companies on via Corso
Train will be the fastest and Visit a winery while in Orvieto if you can. Not all wineries in Italy are drop-in so you need to plan.
Train to Rome, about 75 minutes and transfer to a fast train to Naples, about 90 minutes. In Naples, transfer to the Circumvesuviana, about 70 minutes. Call it 4 hours in trains.
Driving to Sorrento about 4.5-5 hours (most likely the high end of that) not including necessary stops. Naples alone is at least 3.5 hours from Orvieto not including stops and then you have to get the train to Sorrento so 5-6 hours with the drive + train combo.
I prefer trains in Italy instead of cars but when I can get a boat I am a happy guy! The ferry service between Naples and Sorrento is comfortable, relaxing and fun. You get the benefit of some wonderful views, warm breezes, no traffic (Naples and Sorrento are a nightmare!) and, your visit to the area starts a lot sooner. When you get to Sorrento, I'd suggest taking the bus up to the city rather than a taxi (way overpriced). Depending on where you are staying, they might come get you if they have shuttle service, you could walk or take the city bus (which isn't as bad as it may sound). Sorrento is at the top of my list even after 12 annual visits!
With respect to a winery, we have enjoyed visiting Madonna del Latte, just outside Orvieto.
My sister and brother-in-law-in-law have a house in Orvieto and this is a very popular stop for their many guests.
