Best way to tour Tuscany

My husband & I are going to Rome for 4 days then want to rent a car & tour Tuscany for 5 days - I'm pretty open to town suggestions but was starting with Montepulciano, a stop or two in wine country, Pisa, Lucca, Cirque Terre & end in Sienna - return our car & take the train to Florence for 3 days before going home.
Looking at cars they want us to pick up in Rome & drop off in Florence.

What's the best way/order to tour Tuscany with a car but get rid of before Florence. I thought we'd drop if off near Sienna because they don't allow cars - but maybe that's why you can't return a car there.....should we just plan to keep the car until Florence?

Any advise is appreciated!! Thanks, Lisa

We rented an avis car just outside walls of Siena . Worked out great.
Do not drive in Florence, for sure.

Thank you - I'll do some more research on location with Avis to figure this out.

Look at Autoeurope's dropdown menu to see where you can pick and drop off rental cars. When do you plan to visit?
We have picked up in Rome, dropped off in Florence. Your plan has you zig zagging all over Tuscany and beyond, not possible in 5 days.
Make sure you drive historic Rt. 222, the Chiantigiana, that goes through charming towns in the Chianti region, from Siena to Florence.
Your plan has you starting in the south of Tuscany in Montepulciano, then all the way west, away from the heart of Tuscany to Lucca? Lucca is nice but not near other towns. Then back south to Siena, then north to Florence? Why not Montepulciano to Siena, then to Florence for a good taste of Tuscany? You only have five days and have no time to go north to the CInque Terre and do some justice to Tuscany. Where did you hear Siena doesn't allow cars? Pedestrianized walkways and piazzas, yes, but lots of parking adjacent up on the hillside. We have always driven there.

If you stay centrally, like Siena or Castellina in Chianti, it's about an hour to Montepulciano, Pienza, Montalcino, Lucca and Pisa. Plus all the towns in between.
Personally, I would spend your first nite or two in Montepulcian or Montalcino.
Then 3 nites near Siena.
Good advice from Suki to drive the 222.

All of Tuscany is wine country.

Agree, having a car and driving SR222 is a beautiful way to see the countryside of Tuscany
