Best way to see the Colosseum Underground?

My husband's ONLY request for our August trip to Italy is that he wants to tour the Colosseum Underground. One problem: For some reason, the booking process is TOTALLY confusing me.

I do realize the official site doesn't release tickets until a month -- or sometimes a couple weeks -- before the date. It also seems like it's MUCH cheaper than the "tour company" tours -- 20 Euro per person for the official tour vs. $100 through a tour company -- am I missing something? How fast do the official passes sell out once they become available? Should I reserve with a tour company just to be safe, since we're going in the busiest month?

I've tried Google, the official site, and the RS guide and I think I'm just confusing myself more :) Any guidance (and tour company suggestions, if you have 'em) would be much appreciated!

Hi kwahlgren -

From the coopculture website:

"From Monday June, 11th starting from 9 AM it will be possible to reserve Undergrounds’ and Belvedere’s tours according to quarterly availabilities for the months of July, August and September 2018.

"From Monday June, 18th starting from 9 AM it will be possible to reserve Undergrounds’ and Belvedere’s tours according to the monthly availability for July 2018. Reservations will be gradually scheduled according to quarterly availabilities in order to avoid any kind of hoarding and to provide availabilities just before the access date."

This means that you should be up and ready to book your tour at 9:00 AM ROME TIME this coming Monday, If it's just you and your husband and you want the Underground tour, this is the one you will be choosing (quarterly availability):

You want to choose the full entrance ticket € 12,00 + guided tour € 9,00. (X2)

Tickets sell out in minutes so if you are unable to book for some reason, you will have a crack at landing monthly- availability tickets for August in July. As they're doing for June, those will probably go on sale the third Monday (July 16th) at 9:00 AM ROME TIME. Keep an eye on the site for when those tickets will go on sale, though, as they've been shifting dates around lately.

Does this make sense?

I am looking at this option for September and not to sound dumb but when I look at the ticket choices they are in Italian, even though I picked English. Do you know how I can change it to English? I don't know what it says !! :-)

There is an extra level of credit card security that you will likely need to purchase the tickets. If you don't have this already then I recommend contacting your bank/credit card company and getting it set up before you purchase the tickets. Also let them know you will be making purchases in Italy so they don't decline the purchase. I had to have it set up to purchase tickets from venues in Italy.

I wrote a longer post before describing it more fully but it looks like it has been removed - perhaps because I mentioned the name of the company providing the verification service?

Good luck and have fun!

If you're using a visa card be sure you have the "verified by visa" protocol enacted before you try to make the purchase. If using Mastercard be sure to have the "securecode" enacted. This should ensure no issues.

The tickets for July/August/September should be released on Monday the 11th at 9am Rome time. Be sure to be online then in order to try to get these tickets. You'll book full priced "full entrance" tickets for 23 euros each for all adults. For kids under 18 you'll book "free ticket + tour", for kids under 12 you'll book "free ticket + free tour". After that, just follow the prompts.

Update (and one more question!): I was online at 3 a.m. to get tickets, but the website kept timing out, and the english-speaking tours sold out before I could get a transaction to go through. Booked the Spanish-speaking tour instead -- full entrance + guided tour. (I can scrape by in Spanish, and we mainly just want access to see the underground and Belvedere.)

Here's my question, though -- I'm thinking of also booking this 5 Euro guided tour in English:

...to do either before or after the underground tour. Since we already have admission included with the underground tour ticket, would I just choose "free entrance + guided tour" in the options? Thanks!!
