Our ship excursion doesn't include these sights together and we would like to see them all but only have an eight hour day. Any ideas or suggestions? Transportation? We prefer traveling by boat when possible.
What is your port of call? You will not have time to see all that you mention. Purchase a few guide books. Read up on the places you mention and determine which will interest you the most. Of the three, Naples, in my opinion, is not worth the time. I found it to be dirty, and crowded.
We used the Trenitalia train to get into Naples. We had a car and drove right up to Pompeii and up Vesuvius. There are lots of tour busses that will take you from Pompeii to Vesuvius. It is a steep half mile hike to the top. We also enjoyed Herculaneum. It is small thatn Pompeii, but more of the fresoes and mosaics are in place. Herculaneum had lots of big homes, Pompeii is like a real town with shops, theater, brothels, etc.
I agree with skipping Naples, unless you really want to see the fresoes and mosaics from Pompeii in the Archeology Museum. You can take the Cirumvesuvia Train to all the places you listed. It drops you at Pompeii's front door.
Thank you, The ship will be in port at Naples. would you say the train would be safe? Have you taken it? Is it close to the port where the ship will be? Last year we spent most of our time on The Island of Capri. This year we will have 2 fifteen year old girls with us and thought Pompeii and Mt. Vesuvius would be more interesting for them. Thanks
Pompeii can be done in 2 hours with an "official guide" (they hit the must sees)....Get a deal for 50 euros.
Add the hour to get from the port to it and back you are at 4-5 hours. Id spend my day in Sorrento, ships dock here and you will see a great little city.
You will only have time to see one of your sights. If you are intersted in ruins then Pompeii is the place. It will take the whole day to travel there and actually see it. Pompeii will be a train trip. Sorrento is a great town and that will also be a full day. You can travel to Sorrento by boat from Napoli. Since you will already be at the docks Sorrento seems like the ideal choice.
