We would like to spend 6 days this August seeing Lakes Como, Lugano & Maggiore. Although RS doesn't recommend a car, getting from lake to lake without one seems complicated and/or time consuming. What is the easiest way to get from lake to lake?

You should be able to get to all by train, tho perhaps hiring a car to take you there would be acceptable- and likely cheaper than rental, tho not sure. Choose one of the lakes as your base ( Como is our choice, w Varenna or Menaggio or even como as home) and take trains to the others.
