We need to make a deposit to hold our apartment reservation in Rome. We know and trust the apartment owner. He suggested a transfer to his Iban or Swift bank accounts. We have only used PayPal. Can anyone suggest a safe and inexpensive way to send our deposit? Thank you.
Obviously you can use a credit card if they accept credit cards. Europeans make great use of bank transfers than we do in the US. If you do the bank transfer it will probably cost $25 or more from your bank but it may be the easiest. Just make sure that all of your numbers are accurate because once sent there is no recovery. You could also mail a debit card with a fix limit.
I'd suggest setting up an account with Wise (formerly Transferwise) and use that to make the transfer. I've used it for years for many, many tens of thousands of dollars of transfers with no hiccups and for what appear to be very competitive rates.
No personal experience, but I have seen people suggest Transferwise on this website. You might search for Transferwise on this site.
If you bank at a full service bank, they should also be able to do this. There will be a fee.
I’m weary of bank transfers as I don’t believe there is any recourse. Also, if you get a number wrong, there is no way to reverse the transaction. I could be wrong though.
I’ve used Wise app to transfer funds and make purchases from abroad. Easy and inexpensive. If I used my bank to make the transfers, fees would have been 5 times as much.
