two seniors (76 and 67), we are planning to go from salerno (2 nights) to matera (4 nights.0 We both like train travel, but are wondering if its not better to combine train+bus or just bus.
No first hand experience but looks like bus is quicker with no changes
What is nice about the bus is your luggage goes underneath so no dragging on and off trains
Four years ago we did the train/ bus from Naples. Beautiful scenery and easy connection to the bus. Bus stopped close to the old city in Matera.
Trenitalia offers a train +bus combo right to Matera—-train from Napoli Centrale to Salerno ( departs at 13:25) then Freccialink bus from there to Matera.
You cannot book the Freccialink bus on its own; you can only get the combination. But maybe you could buy the combo ticket and only use the bus portion, boarding at Salerno. But I don’t know if that is allowed.
A few years ago I took the bus from Matera to Salerno on my way to Rome.
The bus was boarded at the "bus yard" such as it was near the old town plaza and stopped at the train station in Salerno.
It was convenient and easy. I like trains as well but I don't think that was even available from Matera.
Thank you all for the feedback. looks like bus.
