Best way to get Uffizi Gallery tickets/ reservations?

I checked out what appears to be their website, but the total for two tickets was 40Euros (including a $10 Euro booking fee). Is this common? And is going through their website the best way to get the tickets? I obviously don't want to wait in line, but at the same time, if I can avoid paying $10Euros for a booking fee, I'd prefer that.

And I'm assuming that once the tickets are purchased, you pick them up at a holding window? Thanks for the help.

Chris,
Are you planning to attend the Uffizi only, or other museums while in Florence. There is a Friends of Uffizi pass which gives you entrance to 10+ museums in Florence, no reservations, no waiting in lines, enter as often as you like. Best investment we made in our trip to Florence.

We were definitely hoping to visit some other museums as well, although not sure how many we can squeeze in, as we'll only be in Florence for 2 days. The Friends pass that you mentioned definitely sounds interesting. Do you purchase it online, then pick it up there? We leave in one week for our trip, so it would have to be something we could get there. Thanks for the advice.

If you are staying at a hotel or B&B in Florence they might be able to make the reservations for you.

Or do give them a call directly. It's easy! They have English speaking operators, you have more choices for times than online, and it's done in 2 minutes. Just keep in mind that Italian business hours apply. Later, you simply pick up the tickets at the arranged time and pay then. No need to pay upfront.

Call them directly or use one of the websites. When you purchase the tickets for the Uffizi, you pick up tickets at door 3, showing your receipt. We were let directly in at door 2 after that. Door 3 is across from the two entrance doors (group and single entries).

Don't forget to download Rick's podcasts for Florence. They made our two days very enjoyable.

Thanks everyone for the helpful info and quick replies. Michael- where can you download those podcasts. I've got a few of his books, but I don't recall seeing any mention of podcasts. Thanks again.

Chris:

We got them from I-tunes. They were superbly helpful in enjoying the tours. It made me wish that all of Rick's commentaries were recorded that way. Using an I-pod, hearing his commentary and using your eyes to appreciate the information plus the reality, and the ability to stop-start as you wanted to was just great.

And, he will crack you up at times. I loved the comment about walking our little Uffizi's off. Drew stares of course as I was laughing.

Go to http://www.amicidegliuffizi.it/ Click on "enter", next page choose "become a member", next page scroll near bottom to "Download 2010 Form". We did this, they told us we could fax it in, and they would have our passes ready for us at the welcome desk on our arrival. I don't remember which entrance had the welcome desk, but you can ask any of the guards. Totally worth it!!! You have to fill it out, it's in italian.
