What is the fastest way to get to the Vatican from the main train station in Rome? Also, what is the cheapest way to get there (besides a long walk!). We will not have any luggage with us.
Metro Line A or take Bus 64 or 40 from Termini. Either option will cost 1 euro person. Some people like the metro because the stops are defined but others like the bus because you can see the city.
The bus also gets you closer. If you take the subway, you'll have a little bit of a haul from the stop to the Vatican proper.
Take the 40... Its' the Express bus and only makes seven stops heading from Termini to St. Peter's. It's also usually a DOUBLE-BUS which means more seats and room. The 64 is notorious for pickpockets!
The stop you want is directly AFTER the bus crosses the Via della Concilliazone. How will you know you're there...? Looking to your left you will see St. Peter's Basilica HEAD ON... When you get this view, punch the red button and jump off at the next stop which is a side street (Via Della Transponita) just off the Concilliazone.
The stop is about 50 feet from the main drag. You'll end up directly between St. Peter's and Castel Sant' Angelo! Many times this is the "last stop" and the driver will "clear" the bus anyway!
Good Luck!
We took the metro after buyint the ROMA PASS at the termini...It works on the metro however it is not good for the Vatican since that is its own state. but if you are also going to Colloseum or one other place it is worth it!
