We are taking Rick Steves Best of South Italy and Best of Sicily back to back and trying to figure out best option for getting from Naples to Palermo. Thank you in advance for suggestions.
We flew from Naples to Catania a few years ago. There is also a ferry.
Fly. See skyscanner.com.
Does the tour start in Palermo? There's a slightly busier airport in the eastern part of the island, at Catania. Volotea and Alitalia fly into both cities. EasyJet only goes to Catania.
Yes, the tour starts in Palermo and ends in Catania.
"Best" is subjective but you want to balance time and money. Ferries take time as does the train via ferry at Messina. Flying to Palermo is most time-efficient.
I saw some very low fares for non-stop flights when I checked to see which airlines flew the Naples to Palermo route.
I found the overnight ferry (Tirrenia or GNV) to be plenty comfortable, if you just want to sleep through it. The 9.5-hour train ride is pretty far down anyone's list. The flight prices are usually attractive.
Fly. I have made this trip several different ways, flying is easiest, into Palermo and out of Catania.
Back in 2014, I flew Volotea between Palermo and Naples, fine 1-hour flight, very affordable, on some days ridiculously so. You would probably need to check your normal carry-on, but that cost is low too, if you pay for that when you book your flight. You should have a wonderful time with those two tours.
We took the Tirrenia ferry overnight from Naples to Palermo a few years ago. It was comfortable and clean and without the hassles of the airport. Also, it was nice to arrive early in Palermo, so that worked for us.
