Best way to get to Rome from Civitavecchia Cruise Port

What is the best way to make the transfer from Cruise port to Rome?

As usual that reference is only about half accurate and not very helpful. Most likely the ship will provide a shuttle bus to the port entrance because it could be a very long walk from the ship to the entrance depending on where the ship docks. In our four trips through the port there has always been a shuttle bus. The part about walking to the station is accurate. But the video doesn't that it will be an absolute zoo in the train station especially if more than one ship in port, which is general the case. A much better reference is RoninRome.com Is your cruise terminating in Civit... or are you just there for the day? It makes a difference on what I would further advise for the day. Let me know and I will continue.

That will be the end of our cruise and we want to go to Rome and spend a couple of days before flying home.

There are a few different ways to get to Rome from the cruise port. You can take the train which will cost 5.50 each. You must handle your own luggage and get from the termini station to your hotel but you will be able to catch a cab or walk from the termini if your hotel is close to the termini.

You can hire a private company like romecabs.com but this will cost a bit of money. You can check out their website.

You can take a cab which will cost a few hundred euros.

That means you will have luggage and maybe a lot. When you arrive at the port entrance it will be jammed with taxis, hired car, etc. You might negotiate for a taxi to Rome but it will be in the range of 100 to 125E or even more. It is about an hour drive. As someone suggested you could prearrange a car/driver which probably be best if you cannot easily handle your luggage. We only take three carry-on size bags so walking is not a problem for us.

Once at the station you will see long lines at the ticket window and machines (which is way I objected to that worthless video reference). Go to the right into the Tobacco shop opposite the ticket windows and asked for a second class ticket to room. Better yet, if you are anywhere near a Italy ticket window earlier in your trip, buy the ticket then. Look on the overhead board and find the next train to Rome and the platform. Three to four trains an hour. Time stamp the ticket in a yellow box near the platform. And get on the train in a car with a number 2 on the side. It will be open seating so good luck. It will be absolutely packed with cruise passengers and luggage. Once we rode standing up all the way to Rome. It it is really crowd you could purchase a first class ticket which would be better shot at a seat. For that reason we tend be one of the last off the ship when it is ending in Rome so it is not as crowded going into Rome.

At Termini in Rome you will have a very long walk from the train platform to the front of the station. Civit.. trains use platforms 23 and 24 or 24 and 25 which are in the very far right hand corner of the station as you face the tracks. It is all inside but it could two or three block walk. Hard to judge on the inside. It just takes a while. Restrooms will be downstairs and to your left as you walk to the front. From the front of the station you can take a cab or public transit to your hotel. Again, we stay in the Termini area and simply walk to our hotel.

It is VERY easy to take the train -- cheap as can be vs a taxi/car. Yes, it will be crowded with other cruisers, but as a previous poster said, we (darling daughter and myself) did an 11 day trip with 1 carry-on each (12 kg limit) and walked the easy walk from where the port bus drops you to the station (uphill). We had bought return tickets from Rome earlier and just jumped on the next local train. Super easy, super convenient and more than $100 cheaper than a car for hire. Trains leave all of the time (and we went Civi to Rome on a Sunday, the slowest train day of all.) Good luck.

Frank,

You mentioned possibly purchasing the ticket earlier in our trip. Would I be able to purchase the ticket while we are in Venice? We are staying there a few days before the cruise.

Sure, no problem. Any ticket machine can easily handle the request. Or use a live person but you may have to wait in line. But Donna the train station is on the beach. It is a flat walk. No hills.
