Best way to get to Positano from Naples/Rome

My fiancé and I taking a 12-day trip through Italy starting on October 2nd. We will be starting in Venice and working our way down to Florence, Positano, and leaving out of Rome on October 14th. We initially planned to take trains throughout our trip but now are considering renting a car in Venice (after spending 2 nights there) and driving down to Florence (where we will stay 2 nights). Our B&B in Florence is in the ZTL zone but owner indicated that they have private parking available.

Our main reason for renting a car is so that we can take a leisurely drive through the Italian countryside on our way south and so we have a chance to stop for lunch at a hill town (either Montepulciano or Orvieto). However, on our way to Positano, I want to avoid driving through the Amalfi Coast so I am thinking of dropping off the rental before we reach that part of the trip. Is there any benefit to dropping the car off in Rome instead of Naples? Also, once in Naples or Rome, what is the best (cheapest or fastest) way to get to Positano? I have seen that you can take a ferry from Naples to Sorrento; does anyone know what bus takes you from Sorrento to Positano?

I would take a direct high speed train to SALERNO, then a Travelmar ferry to Positano.
ZTL zones are about driving in, not just parking. if you are not on the white list you'll be fined.
I'd pick the car up in Bologna and drop it either in Rome or in Orvieto, anywhere but NAPLES. There is not much nice countryside to see before Bologna and the Mountains.

Thanks for the tip, darioalb. Can I get myself on the white list when I pickup the car at the rental agency, or is that something I should to do before I arrive in Italy?

Only hotels, parkings and legal B&Bs can do it; otherwise every tourist not sleeping in central Florence could drive in.

Take the train. It will save you time, money ( fuel 6-7 € per gal. Tolls from Florence-Naples
72 € ) and stress.

Train Venice-Florence 2H05m.
Florence-Naples 3hours.

Use this shuttle to get to Positano.

35€per person. Might be discount for R/T.

Train Naples-Rome. 1H10m.

You could stop in Orvieto via train for 4-6 hrs, but it would be a brutal day.

Thank you gerri! Our B&B in Positano has offered to arrange a car to pick us up from Naples for $100 one-way. The shuttle seems way more economical.
