I will be in Rome in May 2010 and will be staying in Positano for two nights. I've traveled by train to Naples before (fast train first class very expensive) Any suggestions?
Judy, the best way would be by train, there is many trains going from Rome Termini station to Naples, they vary in price and duration, fast train can take 1:20 and regional train up to 2:40. I saw second class as low as 10.50 euros and first class for 50 euros, it all depends on how much you want to pay and how fast you need to get there, check it out at www.trenitalia.com, enter roma termini and naples as your stations, the schedule for may 2010 is not available yet. Hope this help!
Martine, Is it best to book the train ahead of time or on arrival? Thanks for the info.
Judy
Judy, there are 50 trains a day departing Rome for Naples. Within the 50 are trains of various classes. The high-speed Eurostars are the most expensive. About 25% of the trains are the Eurostar Alta Velocitas. The fare is 39.90Euro for 2nd class (you don't need the 51.30Euro first class ride for 80 minutes. Not worth it). Next is the regular Eurostar. 2nd Class fare is 30.40Euro. The Eurostars primarily non-stops.
Next are the IC trains. These trains do make stops along the way and take about 30 minutes longer. But, the 2nd class fare is 19.50Euro.
Finally, there are the occasional Regionale train runs. More stops and more time (one hour longer than the Eurostars). 2nd class fare is 10.50. Euro.
You get to decide which one is best for you.
Larry, Thanks for the info. I found it most helpful.
