Best way to get to FCO for EARLY flight

We're going to have 2 nights in Rome after a week and a half in Tuscany/Umbria. Our flight out is at 6:15 a.m., so I imagine we have to be at FCO at 4:15. I looked at staying at airport hotels, but they're super expensive and then we'd have to schlepp in and out of the city for the short time we have. I know the Leonardo Express doesn't run as early as we'd need it. So a few questions:

1) Is our best option a cab?
2) How early should we leave for the airport?

And, somewhat unrelated:
3) Any recommendations for a reasonably priced (ha!) place to stay in Rome?

Thanks!
Cynthia

Your best option is a taxi or car service. There is a night bus from Tibertina Station that runs to Fiumicino but I wouldn't recommend standing on the street with your luggage at that hour. Ask RomeCabs.com to quote you a price for a ride to the airport. Tell them what time you want to be at the airport and they will give you a pick-up time.

Before anyone can recommend a place to saty you'll need to give an amount that you consider "reasonable." For one person that's 60 euro and another that's 120. You need to be more specific.

You may want to try a B&B in Rome. Most of them offer transportation to the airport for about 50E.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to be vague about the reasonable. I'm thinking 100-120 Euro range.

There six months ago. Our hotel arranged a private car for us for an early flight. Four people, four bags, 45 Euros for the whole deal. Regular taxis have a flat rate of 40 Euros

When you figure in the cost of transport, the Hilton at FCO isn't that much more. And they have the free shuttle right into the city center. The shuttle goes in on the hour and back on the odd hour throughout the day.

They have a free ride to the gates in the early am when the walk way is not yet open.

Plan more than 2 hours. Even at 4:15 am the lines are very long. We barely made our flight.

We just returned from Italy staying in Rome. Had that same problem in the past but we were on a tour then and the tour company took care of everyone. This time we hired a car through the hotel. The cost was about the same as a taxi ride - around 50 euros. The ride to FCO takes about 40 minutes but at that hour there won't be a lot of traffic. Rome hotels can be expensive. We stayed on the Via Veneto because we knew the area. A friend stayed at the Hotel Doge, near the Spanish Steps. Nothing fancy about Doge but reasonable.

We had the same problem last month, being at airport by 430, so had hotel arrange a car to pick us up at 400. 70Euros charge from hotel, near Piazza del Populo. About 30-40 min at that time of morning. Paid driver directly.

Pretty smooth affair.

TC has it right. There is a mandated flat taxi rate from central Rome to FCO. We had this same situation in the spring. Our hotel, The Aberdeen, told us about the flat rate and arranged for the 4:15am taxi. We got there with time to spare; Traffic is pretty light at that hour. No need to stay near the airport.

My wife and I departed from FCO not long ago and we had a 10:30 am departure. We arrived at FCO at 6:45 am and we almost didn't make our flight. Thank God our flight was delayed or we would have missed it. The lines are always long and slow at FCO. As for transportation to the airport, have your hotel make narrangements on the day of your arrival to HIRE A CAR AND DRIVER.
