Best Way to get Orvieto from Spoleto

My husband and I are trying to find the best way to travel from Spoleto to Orvieto for a day trip. It seems like the trains take a long time. We’ve never rented a car in Italy but are thinking this may best way. This will be our sixth trip to Italy.

Thank you in advance.

Checked Rome2rio.com. Was suprised to see the bus took about 4 hours while the train takes 3-4. Personally, I’d take the train. Renting a car would be very expensive for a a day, plus there is quite a bit of time involved picking it up. On the train, you can walk around and enjoy a picnic. Looks like there are local trains about every 2 hours. There is one transfer involved.

It is not too bad. Consulting Trenitalia I see an early morning train (07:56) and a late afternoon train (17:27), both taking a somewhat over 2 hours, a large chunk of which is waiting for the connection (with on the plus side you don't have to worry about making it).

We always rent cars in Italy especially for provinces in the countryside like Umbria. It would be a short drive from Spoleto to Orvieto, less than an hour and a half.
We spent two weeks in near Spoleto in Spello and can’t imagine not having a car there to easily explore the region. Most days we were off to other villages like Bevagna or Montefalco, even Norcia, or driving through beautiful vineyards.
We have rented cars through AutoEurope for years and highly recommend them. There is most likely a local agency if you only want a 24 hr rental.
