Best way to get from Venice airport to hotel in Cannaregio

Hi everyone, my first time in Venice will happen tomorrow and I am down to figuring out my airport transfer. Since this is the most important transfer to me, after being up all night in an airplane and arriving with bags, I like to get this one detail right! I asked the hotel and they said to take the water shuttle, ACTV number 5 bus or the ATVO bus. I would like to determine the simplest way to get to the hotel with bags in tow, and prepare in advance (purchase tickets) if possible. Would love to hear your suggestions.

And I realize I should have posted this question much sooner than now, I suppose I thought I could figure it out myself :)

Edit: We are staying at La Palazzina Veneziana. I asked the hotel and they gave me all 3 of the options that I listed above. They did say that one option is to take the Alilaguna to the Guglie stop and the hotel is actually right at that stop. I am fearful that I will not figure out where the alilaguna is and how to purchase a ticket....although I am researching as we speak and feeling a little more confident. It looks like the Alilaguna schedule will have us waiting around for about an hour after we land but I can deal with that since it may be the most effective transfer.

Thank you!!
Michele

Has the hotel told you which vaporetto stop is closest? The buses they mentioned will leave you at the Piazzale Roma, and you can take a vaporetto from there. You can buy a vaporetto pass for 1, 2, 3, or 7 days, as suits your needs.

Look at the hotel’s website or that of a nearby hotel. They often have directions on how to get there.. You might also get directions from Piazzale Roma to your destination using Google maps. Don’t hesitate emailing the hotel.

Enjoy your visit to La Serenissima!

Where in Canareggio? The Alilaguna orange boat goes through Canareggio before reaching the Grand Canal, with stops at Madonna dell'Orto and Guglie. It is likely to be the most convenient option if your Canareggio hotel is close to one of these stops!

Depending on how many bags you have it may also be easy to walk to your Cannaregio hotel from the bus station piazza but there will be at least one bridge to go up and over, easily managed with a carryon and backpack. This is what we did in 2019. Your hotel’s website and Google maps should help you visualize this better.

Take the Alilaguna to your hotel stop for the easiest option. After exiting the airport turn left and follow the signs to Alilaguna and buy your ticket there or there may be a ticket counter in the airport arrival hall after you collect your luggage. You can also buy a vaporetto pass for the number of days that works for you in the arrivals hall. it simplifies the process if you will be using the vaporetto for the islands or San Giorgio. It will be the simplest option to figure out! (I too stressed about the best option and took Bus 5 to the Piazzale Roma bus station where we then transferred to the ACTV vaporetto. The bus ride was packed and a little uncomfortable so not our favorite moment. )

This was a big concern for me when planning my trip in 2016; stayed in the same neighborhood and looking up your hotel on the map it appears to be on the same street but slightly closer than the hotel I stayed at.

Ultimately I chose to take the ATVO to P.Roma and walk from there. It did require crossing two bridges, but they were much easier than expected (I used google maps to get an idea of what to expect in advance), if you look up directions from p.roma to your hotel you will see it is literally a straight shot so the risk of getting lost walking it probably low if you are comfortable walking with your bags. It’s about 10 minutes walk from P.Roma.

If you consider this option it looks like you may be able to buy tickets online or at the automatic machines at the airport. I chose the latter and if I remember correctly, I followed instructions from rick steves guidebook.

It's the bridges that are the main issue on arrival and departure day for most travelers. A slightly longer walk can be well worth it if it cuts the number of bridges you need to climb up and over. In this case, the Palazzina Veneziana is one bridge from the train station and the Ferrovia vaporetto stop. In fact, it looks as if it's right at the eastern end of the aforementioned bridge, the Pointe delle Guglie.

Option 1:
If you arrive by bus at Piazzale Roma, proceeding on food will also require you to cross the large bridge between Piazzale Roma and the train station, the Ponte della Constituzione. Most of the latter has shallow (half-height?) steps, so it's possible to roll bags up and down, with care. This is not a complicated walking route; it's on the way to the Rialto area and San Marco, so once you cross the big bridge to the area around the train station, just follow the mob.

Option 2:
Alternatively, you can hop on the #1 vaporetto at Piazzale Roma Dock G (according to Google Maps) and ride to San Marcuola, which will allow you to avoid both of the bridges that would otherwise be required. The walk from San Marcuola to your hotel is short (Google says 5 minutes) but does involve some turns, so I recommend having an electronic map on your smartphone and hoping you retain reception during the walk. You'll be going straight up (N) on San Marcuola, then turning left (W) on Rio Tera Drio la Chiesa, then right (N) on Rio Tera del Cristo, then left (W) on Rio Tera San Leonardo. After walking for some time along that busy street, you'll come to your hotel on the left just before you hit the bridge. I don't know how visible the hotel is from the main drag, Rio Tera San Leonardo; there's a street cutting off to the left, and the entrance could be on it instead. If you get turned around along the way, ask for directions to the train station (Ferrovia, "fer ro VEE ah"), because everyone can help with that (there might even be "Per Ferrovia" signs at intersections), and your hotel will be on the way to the train station from the San Marcuola stop. This would be easier than I'm making it sound.

A single vaporetto ticket costs 9.50 euros, so figure out how much you'll be using the vaporetti to see whether you'd be better off buying a 24-hour (25 euro), 48-hour (35 euro), 72-hour (45 euro) or 168-hour (65 euro) pass rather than a $$$ single ticket. Don't forget to validate the pass/ticket before each usage. You should see a green light on the validating device.

Option 2B:

Take Vaporetto 3 from Piazzale Roma to the Guglie stop and follow directions below for using the Alilaguna to Guglie.

Option 3:
Take Alilaguna Line A from the airport to the Guglie stop, as the hotel suggested. Walk to the right as close to the waterfront as you can. When you see a bridge to your right, you are there. Your hotel should be pretty much in front of you (not across the bridge). I'm not sure where the entry is. Unless Google Maps is lying to me, your hotel is not right at the Guglie stop. It is, however, a very short and easy walk from that stop. Just remember to head to the right when you disembark.

I see that Google Maps suggests taking Alilaguna A to the Madonna dell' Orto stop instead. It's a quicker trip from the airport but leaves you three bridges from your hotel (or four if you don't take the optimal walking route). I don't see any reason to do that rather than staying on the Alilaguna until it gets to Guglie.

I have never set foot on an Alilaguna boat, but I assume there's good signage from the airport. I wouldn't worry about getting lost on the way to the Alilaguna dock. (I'd pass because of the cost; I'm stubborn that way.)

Thank you thank you for all of the informational responses...I think we'll try the Alilaguna and hope for the best!
