Best way to get from Rome to Austria

We plan to go to Rome the end of April for our first time to Europe. We are hoping to go Austria and tour The Sound of Music area. I was looking for flights but they seem expensive. Is there a reasonable way to get there from Rome? Has anyone went to the Sound of Music tour and is it worth the trip? We will also be going to Lithuania after Austria and wonder how best to get there. Are there any direct trains?

Thank you so much for any help you can offer.

There are no simple answers. There is a night train, run by Oebb (Austrian railways), it is the only direct solution. A daylight train trip needs one or two changes and a full day.
The Salzburg airport is not directly linked with Italy. Your best bet is Rome to Munich by air, then train or shuttle bus to Salzburg. Another option could be Rome to Vienna and then either a fast train to Salzburg or a connecting filght.

The overnight train is the only direct option. There are day train options as well. They are slow, but the stretch through the Alps is very scenic.

If you're looking for flights, the easiest option is probably to fly from Rome to Munich and then take the train to Salzburg.

No direct trains from Austria to Lithuania, Salzburg to Vilnius requires two changes.

Although I lived in Rome, I can't speak to getting to Salzburg (directly) from Rome. We flew to Munich, spent a few days there, and then took the train to Salzburg from Munich. We did one (there are a number from which to choose) of The Sound of Music tours and it was a lot of fun. Some on our tour bus dressed as characters from the movie. We did a lot of singing (encouraged by the guide). If you're asking whether one should go to Salzburg solely for the tour, that would have to be your call. How big of a fan are you?

The train thru the alps is nice, but long and you have to get from Rome to a start( we started in Venice ). I wouldn’t make the trip just to do a SOM tour, but a few daupts in Salzburg are worthwhile
