Best way to get from Paris to Venice

Can someone suggest the quickest and most cost effective way to travel from Paris to Venice. I would like to leave Paris late morning and Venice early evening if possible ?

Flying is the only way that will get you there in the time frame you describe above. The fastest day train is about 10.5hrs. However, some runs are 14.0+hrs. EasyJet and Vueling fly from Paris-CDG to Venice Marco Polo. Myair flys from Paris-Orly to Venice Marco Polo. Of course, these are the inexepensive airlines. You can pay a bit more and fly Air France.

Thanks Larry. I noticed the flights arrive Venice around 9pm. Do you know how late the night life stays open in Venice. I hear they close early ? We plan to travel there during Carnival in Feb for only 2-nights.

Joe, What night life are you referring to? People in Venice don't even start eating in the restaurants until 8:00pm so it's hard to believe that everything closes by 9:00pm.

that's what I want to hear. We're arriving late, so I would hate to learn things close early. Thanks

I can't speak for Venice's nightlife during Carnival, but we just got back from Venice, and they pretty much roll up the sidewalks by 10:30 pm, much earlier than larger cities in Italy. (In Rome, we went to restaurants where the locals wouldn't start showing up until 9:15 pm at the very earliest.)

But Venice is not a big city. In fact, there are only about 60,000 Venetians that live on the island.

But I would imagine that Carnival will be very different.

We have the same itinerary, and I agree that a flight is the best option and surprisingly doesn't cost much. We chose a flight on Vueling. Avoid Ryanair -- they will be cheaper but they use airports that are fairly far out of town.

Michael and Joe,

It's not that Venice has no nightlife, it's that in comparison to the hustle and bustle of the daytime crowds, Venice seems deserted at night (the day trippers go back to the mainland and the cruise ships repack their passengers).

Michael is right about the size of Venice, we often forget that it's just a small city (large town) where everyone knows each other. I have not been there during Carnival, however I suspect that it is non-stop for the last couple of days (we do manage to make it to Mardi Gras every other year or so), so I wouldn't worry about finding things to do. However, it is much like NOLA with respect to the "closed" parties. If you can get an invitation to one of the Balls you will greatly enhance your experience (and probably come home with an outrageous costume)
