We want to get from Palermo to Sorrento . We know we can get a reservation on the train. What about the ferry? We were wondering how reliable the ferry is, how many hours it would take, and the cost. We are aware that we might have to go into Naples and then get the train back to Sorrento. Thanks for any advice out there.
1. Daily overnight car ferry Palermo to Naples: approx. 75 Euros per person in a sleeping cabin with private facilities: 10 hour crossing; 2. Walk 600 yards to Beverello hydrofoil dock; 3a. Hydrofoil from Beverello hydrofoil dock to Sorrento (daily): 30 minutes and 10 Euros; OR OR 3b. Direct SITA morning bus from Naples Ferry Port to Sorrento (daily except Sunday): one hour and 3.40 Euros. www.snav.it www.tirrenia.it www.alilauro.it www.sitabus.it You could also FLY from Palermo (airport bus 5.80 euros) to Naples, then take the Curreri airport bus (10 Euros) direct to Sorrento. Total travel time by air and surface connections: approx. 5 hours. Air fares START around 50 Euros per person each way (Air Italy), but can be MUCH higher, depending on travel date and when the ticket is purchased. www.alitalia.it www.airitaly.it The daylight TRAIN takes 9 hours to Napoli Centrale, and the standard fare is 53.50 Euros in second class, but can be discounted to as little as 21 Euros with the advance purchase, capacity-controlled "MINI" fares. Naples to Sorrento on the Circumvesuviana rail costs 3.40 Euros and takes 65 minutes. www.ferroviedellostato.it

Fly! It is cheap! Part of the train trip is boring, but the ferry could be fun.
