We are traveling from Cinque Terre to Positano in May and are wondering the fastest, most economical way to get down the coast to Positano. Thank you!
Train obviously. Go onto Trenitalia.com and look. Just realize that from the Cinque Terra you will catch a Regional train to La Spezia, then eventually go through Rome, then to either Naples or Salerno. Positano has no train service.
So do a search for train from La Spezia to Naples or Salerno.
From Naples there are Bus options or private driver, from Salerno, the same, but also a ferry service.
You can also do a Google Maps search to turn up other options.
Plan on a 7-9 hour journey.

Fastest is a train to Salerno, then an ferry ride of 1:10. Providing the ferry runs by the time you arrive.

Alternate, is train to Pisa 2 hours. Fly Pisa-Naples, Alitalia has flights. 3+ hours, then this service to Positano. https://www.positanoshuttle.com 1 1/2H
Total time is about the same.
joan,
That's going to be a full travel day, but it will probably be a fairly pleasant trip. There are many options, but you might consider something like this. You didn't specify which of the five towns you were staying in, but using Monterosso as an example.....
- depart Monterosso at 09:07, arrive Napoli Centrale at 15:05 (time 5H:58M, 2 changes in Pisa and Florence). If you use this solution, middle segment from Pisa to Florence is via Regionale, so DON'T forget to validate your ticket prior to boarding the train on the day of travel.
- use Campania Express departure from Napoli P. Garibaldi at 15:39, arriving Sorrento at 16:25. Garibaldi station is downstairs from Napoli Centrale and you can buy tickets when you arrive there. DON'T forget to validate! An alternative solution would be to use a private transfer service from Napoli Centrale to Positano.
- from Sorrento use either a private transfer service, taxi or bus to Positano. After a long day of train travel and hauling luggage, my preference would be a private transfer. I believe this service is listed in the guidebook, so contact them for prices - http://www.monettitaxi17.it/English.htm .
