Best way to get from Capri to Herculeneum

After completing a RS Sicily trip in Oct '17, we plan to spend several additional days, going first to Capri, then Herculaneum, and flying out of Naples. We see there is a flight from Catania (where the RS tour ends) to Capri.

First question: What is the most efficient way to get from Capri to Herculaneum? So far, we can see there is a ferry from Capri to Sorrento, and the Circumvensuvia (sp?) train from Sorrento to Herculaneum. Better options?

Second question: What is the best way to get from Herculaneum to Naples?

Part 2: Circumvesuviana.

We have taken the ferry from Positano to Capri and back; taking it to Sorrento is certainly possible; from there the Circumvesuviana, or a SITA bus.

How are you getting to Capri?

We plan to fly from Catania, Sicily, where the RS tour ends, to Capril About $72/each.

The ferry and the local commuter train are indeed both the cheapest and the easiest. The train is noted for crowding, lack of luggage racks, and musicians taking up collections. But it's really cheap. Make sure you have a ferry schedule for the right month of the year. There are multiple companies on that route in high season, I don't know about October. Ferries can be affected by bad weather. It's a hike (elevator and long walk, or city bus straight there) from the Sorrento port to the Circumvesuviana station. You buy the train tickets at the newsstand to the right of the station. A few Euros each person. Buy another for the ride to Naples, and validate them in the machine on the wall before boarding.

There might also be a ferry to Naples, where you could take the Circumvesuviana the other way, to Herculaneum. Have you seen Pompeii already, or you've firmly decided on Herc? 15-minute downhill walk from the Circumvesuviana station.

Have you considered a private driver and a tour guide while at Herculaneum? We used a fantastic guide a few years ago for a wonderful tour of both Herc. & Pompeii and his brother was a private driver who picked us up from and delivered us back to our hotel in Sorrento. It was a great experience and although we already knew quite a bit about Herc./Pompeii, the tour guide made it come alive even more. A lot of the things he taught us still stick out in my mind. While this isn't cheap, it sure beats taking the crowded and hot Circumvesuviana and then making your way to the site, etc. the driver can then take you to Naples as well. it was a very relaxing and enjoyable day for us due to our driver and guide. If you want their contact info, let me know and I will dig it up.

Susan,

I wasn't aware there were any flights directly to Capri? This website shows the usual options.....

The first sentence would seem to indicate there are no flights, unless you're using a private flight.

I had the same reaction as Ken. I just googled Capri airport and the closest one is Naples. I also went to the wiki page for Catania–Fontanarossa Airport which includes a table with all the airlines and destinations - nothing to Capri.

Sorry Susan, but Capri.com which appears to be a web site with tourist information for Capri, states: "The only way to reach Capri is, obviously, by sea. Ferries depart from Naples and Sorrento." I see no information about flights to Capri, is there even an airport for private planes? Helicopters, maybe. Don't know what your itinerary is, or whether you are spending a night or more in Naples or in Capri, or hoping to do all this on one day, with your baggage with you. One suggestion would be to fly Catania to Naples, then go Capri and back by boat, and Herculaneum back and forth by train, both from Naples. That would seem to me to not be very feasible in one single day, especially in October when the daylight hours begin too be shorter. Your baggage could be stored either in a hotel in Naples, or at the Naples train station.

I'm confused as well as I'm not seeing this information anywhere. Charter helicopter is a possibility but just looking at what those cost for transfers from Naples, you're not going to get it for the price you're quoting.

This is the only other info I'm seeing, and it's private charter: again, won't be $72.

Looks like there's a tiny runway combined with the heliport near Anacapri so if anything, it could only handle very small craft.

You can fly from Catania to Naples stay one night, or lock up luggage in Naples Centrale train station and take Circumvensuvia to Herculaneum ( I highly recommend it over Pompeii) see the archeological museum AFTER seeing the archeological sites. Then pick up luggage and head to port, either by bus ( just outside Naples Centrale) or taxi also next to bus stop, ferry to Capri. Or stay one night in Naples to truely enjoy the museum and Herculaneum, have dinner and go to Capri the next day for a day trip or I recommend staying on the island which is lovely that time of year. You did not state if you are STAYING on Capri. You could head there right away and see Herculaneum on the way back through Naples. I recommend that you stay in Naples the last night before your flight, taking a ferry from Capri in the morning is not advised as sometime there are issues with rough seas.

I would recommend taking the boat to Naples and the Circumvesuviana from Naples to Herculaneum. The Ercolano train station is closer to Naples than to Sorrento. I really liked Herculaneum, have fun there!
